First of all, I would like to again thank my fellow blogger friends for wondering where I was for the last few months. I've been so busy with school, work and trying to take over the world that I haven't really had time to blog. I do apologize, but I thank you so much for wanting to read more. Anyway, I'd like to write about something that I thought was pretty incredible. I must admit, although the magazine Vogue is supposed to be the pinnacle of fashion, I never really liked it. I hated having to carry the heavy magazine, which was mostly filled with advertisements of $50,000 gowns and articles that I could not relate to at all. I never thought the magazine spoke to me-a young urban Latina. So I was more than shocked when I opened it up this month and found that they were touting a Dominican salon as one of the best places to get a blowout. I was truly flabbergasted and had to write about it. The article states:

I went it was ok. My hair is a little longer than shoulder length and they charged me $35 but I guess it was worth it. I will keep going to Mirror Image on 114th and Columbus because I think the overall result was better.
However, Martiza's was pretty good. The only strange thing is that you have to pay before they do your hair. I have never had that experience.
I never pay for a service before I receive it. That's a little odd. I was planning on going tomorrow. My hair is almost waist length so I'm sure it will be more than $15.00 as well. Thanks for your feedback Valerie

I too am a Dominicana en Nueva York from the Washington Heights area and the Bronx and I just started going back to the salon after going natural (no relaxer )for about a year or so. It feels great when your hair looks like a million bucks and you only paid $15! I advise that you buy the hair products that are used in the salon. I use Nexxus Emergencee it makes my hair really strong and whatever Dominican hair products I can find. If you've never been to a Dominican salon GO! my friends are not Dominican and they have gotten their hair done in the Doimnican salons for year. Valerie let me tell you why some of them charge before they start: About two weeks ago I went to the salon that I go to now here in the Bronx and I noticed one of the girls shampooing a teenager and I heard the client say "Oh I thought it was $8" So I immediately think like $8 for what because I pay $18 for a wash n set (roller set and blowout) + $5 tip So the girl says "Well I only have $8" and proceeds to call her mom so she explains to her mom what happened and now the whole salon is speaking in Spanish as we usually do in front of non speaking clients (I translate .. lol) The mother comes through and speaks to the owner's daughter which works there part-time and tells her that she only wanted to get a blowout - pause Now I don't know about ya'll but I like my hair to be fresh when I pay to get it done and the best way to get a great shiny bouncy look is if you get the hair washed and deep treated, rollerset and blowdried. Anywho so the mom says that the girl is only fourteen and she only has $10 and that's what she's gonna pay (!) I understand the salon owner because she says the hair stylist should not have continued to do her hair and that she didn't want an argument and that she had already washed it so she should just continue. But I think that was wrong of the client because although you can get a great look at these salons for little money there is no way you're gonna get a wash n set for $8. Valerie, I haven't written my review yet because I"m going to start my a Trying to Find the Best Dominican Salon in NY review. I will be going to a different Dominican salon in NY ever week and feature them on my site. I will start it next week by writing about my experience with Maritza's Beauty Salon. The salons will be rated based on decorum, the way the hair is washed, styled, what products are used, and overall customer service.
In that case, you should try Mirror Image in Upper Manhattan. They are located 1005 Columbus Ave (212) 531-1821. I have been going there for awhile and there are random media types that pop in for a wash and set. I'm Puerto Rican and can not survive without my weekly wash and set. I'm happy at Mirror Image! The best thing is that I am in and out. They have a great system, you don't sit there for 1hour, just waiting for them to wash your hair. I definitley had the experience of the all day hair salon visits. I have my own little cheat sheet of Dominican Salons that I have visited too--as I'm always willing to try a new salon!

I go there every now and then. They do a pretty good job but you have to pay before service and they did not seem too nice. There was a old lady at the desk called "Mama" who collects the money. She doesnt say hello or thank you and doesnt even smile. So I don't go too often.
