Coconut Oil for Hair-The Proof
Running this site, I get a lot of e-mails. Some are nice, others are weird and some can be really negative. I got a mean e-mail around a week ago with someone spewing anger my direction. I don't like negativity so I'll just quote you some of the e-mail:
"Dear Mrs. DE,
I really don't like the fact that you always tout Coconut Oil for being a magical ingredient for hair. You give false hope to people who follow you in the hopes that their hair will transform itself."
The e-mail went on being insulting afterwards but we don't need all that on my blog. I try to be as positive and as encouraging as possible to my readers. But, I wanted to address something. I grew up in a Dominican family obsessed with hair. If you are familiar with Dominican people, we come in a variety of beautiful shades and hair textures. I have family members that have type 1 hair and others who have Type 4b hair. We are such a beautiful mix of people. I will say this though, we all used coconut oil, and our hair saw the benefits of it. If you don't believe me, then here is a scientific study that tested coconut oil with other oils and showed that coconut oil was really the only one that actually did benefit the hair:

I hope this helps and for that reader, it's not good to be so negative. Lighten up and smile, life is not that serious.
Hugs (even to the mean reader),
DE

People have to realize this is a blog where you give your opinion on things that you like. Even the pro's (and that's absolutely no insult to your expertise but distinguising between licensed cosmetologists) will recommend things that while it may be a great product, everyone will not love either because it didn't work well with a specific hair texture, Or the person was looking for a magic pill that would change their hair from what it is to what they want it to be or what they would like for it to do. Which is a matter of embracing what you have and learning what works best for your particular hair type/needs.
And you handled the negativitiy like a trooper, I'll note this for when hate crosses my path:)
why would someone get that mad about coconut oil? really?
I think one of the reasons that I love your blog so much is because you really seem like a nice person. I have bought most of the products that you've recommended and I honestly think that they do work. I also love that when I e-mailed you about my hair care regime you recommended 4 products and vitamins and my hair really did change for the better. Thanks DE
Well said... I've heard nothing but great things about coconut oil myself. I have yet to try it but I plan on doing so very soon. One of my close friends who is of West Indian descent also grew up using coconut oil and she also swears by it.
But nevertheless, nothing is going to perform 'magic'. However, with proper upkeep and maintenance you're hair WILL be healthy.
I mean really...the oil will work differently on different types of hair. She's probably upset becasue her hair did not end up looking like yours. Ditts DE: Life is not that serious!
Very well put DE...I love your blog and if Im interested in something you recommend I'll try it..if it doesn't work on me it's not your fault nor mine it just wasn't for me :)
Thx for always being so honest!
hey DE,
Coconut oil is awesome. I love it!!!
I love coconut oil. I use it every single day on my hair as while as my body.
Per your recommendation, I put coconut oil in my hair overnight before going to the salon. My hair is soft, shiny, and healthy looking. I do however wonder should I use it everyday. Please answer this question. I love it! It worked for me.
Shake the haters! I love your blog!!!!
your blog is awesome and you know what you're talking about, I've always liked using products that contain coconut oil and my boss which is Indian says she gives herself scalp massages with the oil regularly.Pantene conditioner does not do it for my hair and I haven't sent them a letter complaining. LOL
Luxe, I think giving yourself a coconut massage twice a week is sufficient. thanks for all your positive responses sweeties. Hugs to all of you.
No one can argue with RESULTS.
Coconut transformed my desert dry hair into a soft, silk mane. It's the best conditioner I've ever used.
That's really a shame that people would take the time to send you hateful emails. You're doing a wonderful job so don't let the negative comments get you down, which I'm sure you're not! :-)
I've head great things about coconut oil for both hair and skin.
You have a great blog- keep up the great work! The lesson in this is simple- not every product works the same on every person.
Coconut oil is the ISH...(in my opinion) everyone doesn't have the same type of hair, and everything doesn't work for everyone. So good for you for staying positive, your blog is awesome and you are doing something right if you are getting a reaction. Keep up the great work!
Some ppl are just crazy! coconut oil is the truth no matter what they said. They probably didnt get the Extra Virgin Coconut oil...there is a slight difference.
Sorry to hear that you got an insulting email from a reader. While readers' trust is everything when it comes to blogging, readers should also think for themselves and try the product, tip, etc. for themselves. If she didn't like it, there's no reason why she couldn't leave a polite comment and open up a discussion about why it didn't work for her. Why be snarky about it?
As for the coconut oil, I have super straight Asian hair that I abuse far too often. I've found that Coconut oil is still one of the best treatments for smoothing my split ends : )
I purchase %100 pure coconut oil from an international grocery store and it is the best thing that ever happened to my hair. I use it daily and like other posts, apply a generous amount overnight before going to the salon. I have severely dry hair and skin. I highly recommend it. It is as good or better than Ojon.
Well, my reply is very late since I'm new to the blog, BUT I'll reiterate that products/oils don't work equally well for everybody. I like coconut oil, but for me avocado oil is better.
I will add this, one product is not going to change your hair overnight. WIth this level of anger, I take it that this girl probably had ridiculously damaged hair. So, she probably needs to cut down on heat, deep condition, get a trim...the works AND then fairly assess coconut oil. I have thick, 4a, bra-strap length hair and have found that a good conditioner followed with natural oil is a winner (air dried rollersets and braid-outs certainly don't hurt). Just my 2 cents.
There are tonnes of benefits of the virgin coconut oil - not only for hair. Do visit my blog to get to know more about it.

It’s very great nutrition for the hair. I hear from many people about its efficiency.aly
Very true…infact virgin coconut oil is even better than olive oil..olive oils promote platelet stickiness which can cause blood clots….In South America, virgin coconut oil is drunk by the glass as a means of overcoming illness and speeding up recovery. The virgin coconut oil is excellent for eczema because the MCFA (medium chain fatty acids) component repairs the damaged skin when it enters into the cell structures of connective tissues..

MeritVCO Extra Virgin Coconut Oil the safest skin moisturizer
MeritVCO Extra virgin coconut oil oil is one of the trusted skin moisturizer and hair treatments in tropical countries. Virgin coconut oil is better than most expensive commercial moisturizer and hair conditioners in the market, because it does not only soften rough skin, it is also loaded with antioxidants that help repair skin damage and strengthen skin tissues therefore preventing wrinkles. Most commercial creams and lotions are predominantly water. When the water enters the skin, it expands the tissues, so wrinkles fade away and the skin looks and feel smoother, but this effect is just temporary, as soon as the water evaporates, the dry wrinkled skin returns. Another thing is this moisturizer contains highly refined ingredients (devoid of all natural protective antioxidants), which can do more harm to our skin.
coconut oil is really effective for hair. it makes hair shiny, thick and soft. i don't understand why the email sender can't accept that. maybe she has not tried using it.
I am a 47 y/o african american who is also into the best beauty products, and I must say that after continuous use of pure virgin coconut oil on my hair overnight as a pre-treatment before shampoo, not only made my hair beautiful and silky to touch, but got rid of dandruff. I notice I can wear black and navy blue and other dark clothes without snowflakes on my shoulder. I can not stop touching my hair!!! (LOL) and people often ask me am I wearing weave. Another beauty secret that I absolutely swear by is pure jojoba oil. OMG this is the oil to use when setting, after blow drying, or hot curling. The hair has so much shine and beautiful bounce. It does not weight the hair down at all. It seems like the hair shaft sucks the oil in. So I am also proof that virgin coconut oil with continuous use will make your hair gorgeous.
Not sure how many men have commented about using coconut oil on their hair, but I use it everyday. I'm an african american male and its the best thing I've used for dry hair. Its great on the skin and also like cooking with it as well. I have a tight budget so like to get bang for my buck. Here's where I get my supply. http://www.amazon.com/Unrefined-Organic-Virgin-Coconut-Oil/dp/B004284VWO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1311447715&sr=8-1
