Life Advice Thursdays: Ways to Be a Power Woman!

A good girlfriend of mine constantly makes me proud. By the time this woman was 25, she already had an amazing career  and now at 30, she just bought an insane apartment in Brooklyn. She's had such great life experiences and such a lucrative career in her short life. Recently she left a job to take on another one, and her last job practically begged her to stay on. So I asked her recently to please give me and my girls (you guys) advice on how we all can be such power women. So here's a few things that she has done in her life that she feels has helped her  reach serious success:

"1)Make Yourself Invaluable -I go into every job thinking how can I be invaluable and different. What can I do that no one else can? If you start wanting to be like everyone else, guess what, you will be like everyone else, and you'll be the first one to be let go when there are layoffs. Go into every single job thinking how can I be invaluable, and believe me your mind will find ways to be.

2) Don't be too big for any job. -In my last office, one day I had a very important meeting. My assistant was having serious issues with our copier and I needed over 300 copies made within 30 minutes. The people that fix the copy machine couldn't come for another few hours, so I went downstairs, took my heels off, and my blazer and went to WORK trying to fix that copier. After three minutes it was fixed. Don't be too big for any job. If you need to get your hands dirty for your career, do it.

3) Don't depend on other people-this is a huge mistake I see so many people make. They depend on people to get their stuff done. No one is going to care more about your career than you. I have an assistant, but honestly if something is super important I just do it myself because I need to make sure it's done right for my sake. If my assistant screws up, no one is looking at her, but all eyes will be on me.

4) Stop waiting for people to help you-During college I had so many amazing internships, and so many people gave me their cards and told me to immediately call them after graduation because they would help me. The day after my graduation I called every one of them. Guess how many people called me back. NOT ONE. But now being in this business I realize talk is super cheap. People give their cards out to everyone and anyone. When someone gives you their card and promises that they will help you, don't bank on it. Find ways to make your own path, and your own way. Yes reach out to them, but make sure that is not the only thing you depend on.

5) Answer your emails immediately-When it comes to emails, I am super crazy. If you email me during the day you will hear back from myself or my assistant within the hour. Why? I like you to know that I'm on top of my stuff.  Once people know that, they know they are in good hands.

6) Say hello to everyone, you never know who can help you-This is super important. I know people that walk by janitors, door people and say nothing. Not me, I say hello to every single person I encounter. You never know who can help you. My janitor actually saved my ass one day. I was running to a meeting, and by the time I got to the meeting I realized I didn't have my spreadsheets with me, I was such in a rush to be early, I had left them on my desk at home. I called my janitor and told him the problem, and he asked one of the porters in my building to bring my stuff to me. Had I not been nice to him, do you think he would have ever done that for me? Heck no! People like to be acknowledged and if you go around ignoring people, why the heck would they want to help you.

7)Don't talk ish about anyone you work with -This is a huge problem amongst people at work and I hate to say this, but since I know Milly isn't using my name, a huge issue amongst women. They forge alliances with other women, then they complain about someone, and then everyone in the office knows about it. Huge mistake. If you have issues with someone at work, the only person that needs to know about it, is a human resource person or someone that can actually help you. Once I know someone is gossiping about someone else at work, I look at that person as just that, an office gossip and usually I want nothing to do with them. Remember this, you never look good when you talk about someone else. Never. As soon as I find out you're talking about someone else, I immediately think you're talking about me too.

8) Be on top of your industry: There have been so many changes in my industry, but guess what I'm on top of every single one of them.  When I find out about new technologies, I want to be the first one to know about them, and how they can make me better and usually these new technologies are designed to make your job easier so make sure you are learning about everything new that comes through your business. Don't think that your job will keep you because you're a good person and you don't need to learn new things. That's bs. In the end, if you don't keep up on new advances at work, you'll get fired in a heartbeat.

9) Don't be ruthless: I see a lot of women try to get ahead by cutting a colleague's throat. Milly will tell you that I am a huge believer in Karma, and I've seen all of these women who cut someone else's throat at work, get screwed in the end. I know it may be tempting to step on someone else's toes to get ahead, but I've learned in life, you don't need to do that. Your work should speak for itself. I remember this one girl at one of my first jobs, who got this girl fired. A few months later, the girl who got her fired, got fired too. She went on a job interview a few months later for an amazing job, and guess who was the interviewer, the girl that she got fired. Needless to say not only did the girl not get the job, but the other girl refused to interview her. See what I'm saying.

10) Have balance: I am a workaholic, no doubt. But, I do make sure I have a personal life. I take yoga, go out to dinner with my girls, and I'm in a strong relationship. Many women tend to focus on their careers in their twenties and thirties, and that's great (I did that too!) but you should have some sort of social life. I know someone who is 44 years old who was so focused on her career, she now has only that, her career, no friends, no nothing. Do you think she's happy? Although money is a great thing to have, it will never make you happy. Try to have balance when it comes to your life.

B by Brian Atwood-Shoe Release Party

Yesterday I was invited by Saks to attend the B by Brian Atwood launch. If you aren't familiar with Brian Atwood shoes, they are insanely gorgeous but so expensive.  His new line B by Brian Atwood is still expensive ( $275-600) but lower priced than his regular shoes which normally run for $675 and up. Let's take a look at these gorgeous shoes!

lia sophia Jewels

So during Fashion week, a lot of brands hold suites where they showcase their latest items, so I stopped by lia sophia's suite yesterday and  I fell in love with their gorgeous, and very affordable jewelry. I also love that this company allows women to sell their jewels from home and basically have their own business. This opportunity would be great for stay at home moms who want to make their own cash or even for a woman who already works and just wants to make more money. You can become a hostess and throw a lia sophia jewelry party for all your friends where they get to examine and order the goodies and you get commission, or you can become an advisor and basically start selling the jewels and making this your business. Mally Roncal Tracy Reese Spring 2012 Makeup Backstage

On Sunday I paid a visit to one of the most beautiful people on earth Mally Roncal. She was doing the makeup for one of my favorite designers Tracy Reese.  You girls know how much I adore Mally. If you don't, I explain why here. Anyway, Mally created such a fun and dreamy look for the Tracy Reese show. Mally said Tracy's collection was very dreamy, very romantic, and Mally wanted the girls to encompass that. The look she created was all about being young, and fresh, all about rebirth. So the  skin was satin, not matte. To achieve the look Mally first began by creating a smooth base for the foundation by  using her Perfect Prep Poreless Primer. She then used her Ultimate Performance Professional Foundation. Then to create a non shimmery healthy flush. Mally used her 24/7 blush in Medium very high on the apples of the cheeks.

Then to set the makeup, Mally used her Poreless Face Defender all over the face.

Mally said the brows were strong but natural. She used her Brow Boost to obtain the look. As for the eyes, she used Evercolor Starlight Waterproof liner in Midnight to create a  winged, almost like the model did-it-herself look.  She then used Mally's Sensational Eyeshadow just to smudge the eyeliner.And then finished the eyes off with Mally's Black Volumizing Mascara:

As for the lips Mally wanted to create a mutli dimensional shade so she used Mally's Lip Magnifier in Fierce on the top and Lipgloss in Be A Peach on the bottom.

All in all a gorgeous look. As for the Nails Tracy Reese always collaborates with Sally Hansen, and the nail color used for this look was Temptation.

Nuance Salma Hayek Color Vibrance Lipstick Review and Swatches

When I first started trying Salma Hayek Nuance products (over two months ago) I didn't know what to expect. I had tried many celebrity products before and had been less than impressed. But this line was different.  The quality of many of her products was just spectacular. After meeting Salma last week and seeing how incredibly passionate she was about her line, how she told us that  she worked with CVS because she believed beauty should be a right, and not a luxury, and how she spoke so fondly of her abuela and how this product line was personal for her, everything made sense to me. Salma says she was never just going to put her name on a line without testing everything first and  she told us, she has very high standards when it comes to quality.  Now her  Nuance Salma Hayek Color Vibrance Lipsticks are out of this world. Pigmented, rich, opaque, and so moisturizing to the lips, I am in love with all of these.

These will not dry your lips at all. They are loaded with vitamin e to keep those lips hydrated, and man does it work.  Here are swatches.

1st swatch is My Favorite  which is a beautiful opaque earthy pink-Salma told us she calls this color her Favorite because she feels like every woman could wear it. She also calls it her favorite because her grandmother always told her that when she was married, she needed to wake up 15 minutes before her husband, and make sure she have a lipstick on her bedside that she could apply on her lips and even on her cheeks, and then wait for her husband to get up. Salma believes My Favorite is that lipstick.
2nd swatch is Plum muave-

Weekend Updates & Dominican Salon Review (sorta)

My hair after getting it done at MJ Beauty Salon

Hey loves, Fashion week has begun, how fun. Although honestly this year I won't be covering so many shows. The fact is my husband is away and hiring a babysitter to  watch lil man while I go to fashion shows  isn't cheap. So I'm going to be very picky when it comes to shows. Anyway, let's talk weekend. Saturday I did nothing, except I went to a new salon around my area. I haven't reviewed a Dominican salon in so long because I've pretty much been doing my hair by myself, but I went to one on Saturday and this woman made my hair look amazing, and she only charged me $20. 00. Her name was Estelle. Here's the card to the salon if you want to go.

Although Sunday was a very sad day, I headed to cover Tracy Reese because I support Mally Roncal (who was doing the makeup) and Tracy Reese (whom I love as a designer) I will have a separate post with all of the makeup done at the show probably tonight or tomorrow. One of the reasons I love fashion week is because of the gorgeous people, you get to see. Here are some gorgeous people I saw around Lincoln Center:

I then headed to Tracy Reese, and saw my sweet Mally Roncal (will cover show in separate post)

Then after covering Tracy Reese. I ran to take the subway. (Babysitter isn't cheap!) Now this is really cool. New York City released a subway from the 1920's in honor of the show Boardwalk Empire. You can take it from 42nd to 96th st. You should have seen my shock when I saw this old train heading towards me. The interesting thing is, these trains were a lot more comfortable than the ones we have now.

When I got home, I headed to the drugstore, and discovered that Kim Kardashian has a new fragrance out called Gold. Did you guys know that? (I will have review up later this week.)

I decided I needed some new cute shoes and I headed to payless. (I love the Christian Siriano collection there) and I bough these. They are so perfect for an outfit of the day post I will be doing, and they are currently on sale.

Then I headed home and watched September 11 specials which broke my heart. Every year, I always log on to this girl's memorial page. Her name was Joanne Vidal. Her father and my father were friends. I look through her page, and I see me in her. Truthfully I think all of us can see a little bit of ourselves in her. She was 26, a young girl trying to make it in this world. She had landed her dream job. She didn't even work at the WTC. She just had a meeting that day on Windows of the World.  She was also Dominican, and so beautiful and look at the wonderful comments people made about her. How many lives she touched. This young girl made such an impact in her short life.   Here's the link to her page.

Dos and Don'ts of Dark Circles & Puffy Eyes

I'm lucky that I've never really suffered with intense dark circles. Although I'm noticing them more lately because of insomnia, and a husband who snores so loud I can hear him in the next room,  it's not as bad as it could be. However, I do tend to suffer from puffy eyes.  Many people attribute dark circles to just a lack of sleep, and yes that might be true, but dark circles mostly come from lack of iron, genetics, aging, nasal congestion, and the fact that the skin under the eyes is much thinner than the skin on the rest of your body so you can see your veins there. Here are some tips on how to help dark circles and puffy eyes:

1) Make sure your diet is rich in iron rich foods. Try drinking a smoothie with a whole bunch of greens like kale, spinach and watercress. If you don't want to do all that, then grab an iron supplement (preferably food based) and take it. (Consult with a Dr. before taking any supplement I recommend).
2) For Dark Circles the Mayo Clinic recommends creams that contain Vitamin K, Retinol, or Vitamin C. They've shown effectiveness with helping dark circles. Here's some that have gotten great reviews:

3) For eye puffiness, I always put my eye cream in the refrigerator. Once applied, the cold helps get rid of the puffiness.
4) Use green tea bags under the eyes too. They help a lot with puffiness.
5) Try to sleep more, and not drink as much alcohol, or caffeine as they can worsen the condition.
6) Try to sleep with your head on 2 pillows. Your head elevated will reduce the puffiness under the eyes.
7) Dark circles can be worsened by allergies, so try getting an air purifier in your room, or humidifier to help.
8) Also, just want to say this because I really hate creams that lie and say they will get rid of dark circles. That's BS. The fact is no cream will GET RID of dark circles, but creams can help. If you want to get rid, then consult with your local dermatologist.
9) Finally if you just want a good concealer for under eyes, the concealer that I love and personally use is Eve Pearl's Salmon Concealer. It really helps  dark circles look like they are not even there.

MY FASHIONS NIGHT OUT

Last night, NYC was insane. Now my day started off pretty amazing. Myself and a few other bloggers got invited to have lunch with Salma Hayek and talk about her line exclusively sold at CVS, Nuance by Salma Hayek.  How exciting! This woman is so passionate about her brand. It was really amazing to see her enthusiasm. Salma was truly sweet, insanely gorgeous and so funny. Salma's abuela reminded me a lot of mine. Her abuela would always tell her to wake up 15 minutes before her husband, and make sure she had one lipstick  on her dresser that she could quickly apply on her lips and even on her cheeks before her husband woke up. That is so something my abuela would say. Anyway, here's a pic of me and Salma! (Bad pic of me, good pic of her.) Then I headed home to get ready to meet Rachel Roy at Macys. Rachel is collaborating with a basketball player on a womens clothing line. His name is Amar'e Stoudemire. I rushed to Macys and it was insane. 

 Also here I am with Rachel. I asked Rachel about following her dreams while being a mother. She said "try to have balance, but forgive yourself if sometimes you don't. It's ok sometimes." Rachel has amazing energy. She was truly a sweetheart. Here I am with her:

I was with Mr. Milly who was really hungry, so we headed downtown to eat at Pastis.
While sitting down, I spotted Jennifer from Basketball Wives (my guilty pleasure, don't judge me).  I took a pic with her. She's so darn tall and gorgeous.

Then we headed to this Maybelline event

But by then I think Mr. Milly was ready to go home and honestly I was so exhausted. So we left.
A fun night. Lots of insane things happening.Can't wait for the next one.
